A self-proclaimed celebration of “family values,” the “Hetero Awesome Fest” aimed to present an “alternative” to LGBTQ+ Pride festivities was held this past June in Boise Idaho. With a notably sparse turnout, lack of community sponsors, and a musical protest that momentarily disrupted its programming, the event seems to have not generated much interest. Crowd counts show no more than 50 or so people in attendance at any time during the two day event.
Meanwhile, Boise’s LGBTQ+ community responded with a humorous, purposeful, and clear message, inviting everyone to participate in shared dialogue, as well as a satirical drag show, “But, What About Straight Pride," all efforts designed to highlight the ongoing campaign for the support of queer rights.
As for the future of the “Hetero Awesome Fest,” organizers have not yet confirmed if the event will return in 2026. Given the low attendance, apparent lack of broader community buy-in, and the public incident that overshadowed much of its planned programming, the festival’s longevity remains highly uncertain.
